What Happened to ChatGPT Instant Checkout (and Where Checkout Went)
OpenAI's buy button lasted about six months as the main way to purchase in ChatGPT. Checkout went back to merchant sites and merchant apps, and ChatGPT became a discovery channel. The dated story, and what it means for your store.
What was ChatGPT Instant Checkout, and is it still available?
ChatGPT Instant Checkout let a shopper buy a product inside a ChatGPT conversation without visiting the merchant's website. OpenAI launched it on 29 September 2025 for US users buying from US Etsy sellers, single item only, with Shopify merchants announced as next (Stripe, 29 September 2025). It ran on the Agentic Commerce Protocol, which OpenAI built with Stripe.
It is no longer the main way to buy in ChatGPT. In early March 2026 OpenAI told reporters that "Instant Checkout is moving to Apps" (Digital Commerce 360, 6 March 2026). On 24 March it relaunched shopping in ChatGPT around product discovery and said merchants can use their own checkout (Modern Retail). As of October 2026, a shopper who finds a product in ChatGPT usually completes the purchase in one of two places:
- On the merchant's own website, opened from ChatGPT. Shopify's help center calls ChatGPT a discovery-focused referrer and says the purchase completes in your online store checkout, inside ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab (Shopify Help Center).
- Inside a merchant's own app in ChatGPT, such as Walmart's, which handles account linking, loyalty and payment.
We found no OpenAI announcement of a full shutdown. The plumbing, the Agentic Commerce Protocol, is still maintained. What changed is who runs the checkout. Below is the timeline, why it stalled, and what a merchant should do now.

Where the reports conflict
Coverage of the scale-back does not agree on every detail, so here is what differs.
- The date. Outlets date the first report from The Information anywhere from 4 to 6 March 2026. Digital Commerce 360 published OpenAI's statement on 6 March. OpenAI's own discovery post followed on 24 March.
- How many Shopify merchants were live. Forrester reports that The Information counted about a dozen Shopify merchants live on Instant Checkout. A month earlier, Shopify had told Forrester the number was closer to 30 and rising (Forrester, 7 March 2026). Either way, it was a tiny share of Shopify's merchants.
- Ended or paused. Some blogs describe Instant Checkout as shut down. Forrester notes that OpenAI's statement described the move as a temporary scale-back. OpenAI's developer pages still onboard approved merchant partners for ACP and still document the checkout API (OpenAI developers). As of late March, TechInformed found OpenAI's documentation still describing Instant Checkout as available to approved partners. When we checked the getting-started guide on 22 October 2026, it no longer mentioned Instant Checkout.
Why Instant Checkout stalled
OpenAI's own explanation was brief: on 24 March it said the initial version was not as flexible as it wanted (quoted by Modern Retail). The reporting around it fills in the rest.
- People researched in ChatGPT but did not buy there. The Information's source said OpenAI staff saw exactly that pattern, according to Modern Retail.
- One item at a time does not match how people shop. Walmart's Daniel Danker told Wired that conversion for items bought inside the chatbot was three times lower than for items that clicked out to Walmart. He said shoppers did not want checkout split item by item when they had other things in their cart (via Modern Retail).
- Sales were small even for the launch partner. An Etsy spokesperson told Modern Retail that sales volume was not large, and that ChatGPT's value was referral traffic.
- Retailers want their customer. Circana's Marshal Cohen told Modern Retail that retailers do not want an app selling their items without the rest of their store around them.
- Checkout is hard to rebuild in a chat. Forrester points to payment complexity, compliance and trust, and notes that merchants did not plan inventory for a channel that mostly sees what is currently on sale.
The shopper used ChatGPT to decide and the merchant's own store to buy. OpenAI rebuilt shopping around that habit.

None of this means agentic checkout failed everywhere. Google runs in-chat checkout through the Universal Commerce Protocol, and Microsoft runs Copilot Checkout. What failed was one design: a single-item buy button that stood between the shopper and the merchant's own cart, account and loyalty programme.

Back to the merchant's site
ChatGPT now acts mainly as a discovery and referral channel. The March relaunch added side-by-side comparisons, conversational filtering and image-based lookalike search for Free, Go, Plus and Pro users, according to TechInformed. Target, Sephora, Nordstrom, Lowe's, Best Buy, The Home Depot and Wayfair feed their catalogs into it through ACP. Shopify merchants are represented through Shopify Catalog. Shopify confirmed on 6 March that it still syndicates merchant catalogs to ChatGPT (Forrester).
Shopping research reads the open web too
Feeds are not the only input. OpenAI's shopping research mode, launched on 24 November 2025, asks the shopper follow-up questions and then writes a buyer's guide. OpenAI said the results draw on publicly available information, that chats are not shared with retailers, and that the tool can get price and availability wrong, so shoppers should check on the merchant's site. Even at launch, purchases from shopping research went through retailer websites.
For a merchant, that means two inputs shape what ChatGPT says about a product: the structured feed you send, and the public pages, reviews and specifications it can read. A feed with the right price cannot fix a product page with a missing size chart, and a strong product page cannot fix a feed that says the item is out of stock. Both have to tell the same story, because the shopper meets the answer first and your store second.
Into merchant apps inside ChatGPT
Large retailers build their own apps in ChatGPT, and they differ in how far they go:
- Walmart. Walmart's Sparky app supports account linking, loyalty and payment, so a Walmart purchase can still finish in ChatGPT, inside Walmart's own environment (Retail Dive, 25 March 2026). This is the answer to "Walmart ChatGPT Instant Checkout" today: the app replaced the buy button.
- Etsy. Etsy's app launched in beta on 5 May 2026. Shoppers tag @Etsy, compare listings in the chat and click through to Etsy to buy (Retail Dive). Etsy's CTO Rafe Colburn said the app gives shoppers a deeper view into sellers' items.
- Others. Lowe's app shows product details and availability and links to its website for the transaction. Instacart, DoorDash and CarMax also run apps (Modern Retail).
To other assistants that kept in-chat checkout
Google's AI Mode and Gemini sell through the Universal Commerce Protocol, with the merchant as seller of record. Microsoft's Copilot Checkout uses Stripe, PayPal and Shopify. The protocols behind them are compared in ACP vs UCP vs AP2.
What merchants should do now
- Treat ChatGPT as a discovery channel and get into its index. The route is a product feed. OpenAI's merchant programme accepts approved partners through chatgpt.com/merchants. Its guide recommends a full daily snapshot by file upload plus intraday updates through the API, with promotions sent only through the API (OpenAI developers). Shopify merchants are covered through Shopify Catalog. Our guide on getting your products into ChatGPT shopping walks through the options.
- Keep the feed and the store in sync. TechInformed notes that ChatGPT can show prices that lag behind merchant updates and may rewrite titles. A shopper who clicks a $49 item and lands on a $59 page leaves. Price, availability and variants in the feed must match the landing page.
- Make the click-out land well. The purchase now happens on your own pages, often in ChatGPT's in-app browser. Deep-link to the exact variant, keep the mobile checkout short, and make express wallets available.
- Measure ChatGPT as a referrer. Segment sessions and orders from chatgpt.com in your analytics, so you can judge the channel by revenue rather than by headlines.
- Build an app only for a reason. Walmart built one because account linking and loyalty matter to its customers. Etsy built one to learn how people search conversationally. A small brand gets more from a clean feed than from a ChatGPT app.
- Do not throw away protocol work. OpenAI calls ACP the infrastructure connecting users to merchants, and Forrester reads OpenAI's statement as describing a temporary step back. Checkout endpoints you build for ACP or UCP keep their value for other surfaces.
Everything above rests on the same layer: product data an AI can read and trust. If your catalog is not there yet, start with what AI commerce is and Shopify and agentic commerce. More coverage sits on the AI shopping agents topic page.
FAQ
Is ChatGPT Instant Checkout still available?
Not as the main way to buy. Since March 2026, OpenAI has let merchants use their own checkout, and most ChatGPT purchases finish on the merchant's site or inside a merchant's app in ChatGPT, such as Walmart's.
What is ChatGPT Instant Checkout?
A feature launched on 29 September 2025 that let US ChatGPT users buy single items from US Etsy sellers inside the chat. It was built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol, with Stripe handling payment tokens and the merchant remaining the seller.
Why did OpenAI scale back Instant Checkout?
OpenAI said the first version lacked the flexibility it wanted. Reports added that users researched in ChatGPT but bought elsewhere, single-item carts did not match real baskets, and launch partners such as Etsy saw little sales volume.
Can you still buy from Walmart in ChatGPT?
Yes, through Walmart's own app in ChatGPT, powered by its Sparky assistant, which supports account linking, loyalty and payment. It replaced Walmart's original Instant Checkout integration.
Does ChatGPT still use the Agentic Commerce Protocol?
Yes. OpenAI says ACP connects users to merchants across the shopping journey, and retailers use it to send product feeds and promotions into ChatGPT.
