How to Get Your Products Into ChatGPT Shopping (2026)
There are three ways into ChatGPT's product results: the crawl, a direct product feed, and Shopify Catalog. Here is how each one works as of October 2026, which crawler is which, and what decides whether your product gets picked.
The short answer
To get your products into ChatGPT shopping, you need to be readable by OpenAI in at least one of three ways: let OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, read your product pages; apply for a direct ChatGPT product feed at chatgpt.com/merchants; or, if you sell on Shopify, keep your products shared through Shopify Catalog, which feeds ChatGPT by default. There is no fee and no bid for organic placement. ChatGPT decides which products to show based on how well they match what the shopper asked for.
Two things changed in 2026 that most older guides miss. First, checkout moved back to your website. OpenAI scaled back Instant Checkout in March 2026 and said merchants can use their own checkout while ChatGPT focuses on product discovery (CNBC, 24 March 2026). The full story is in what happened to ChatGPT Instant Checkout. Second, ads arrived. OpenAI announced ads for logged-in US adults on the Free and Go plans on 16 January 2026 and says they do not influence answers (OpenAI). Organic product results and paid placements are now two separate things.
The rest of this guide is the step-by-step version, with the official sources for each step, as of October 2026.
How ChatGPT shopping works in 2026
ChatGPT shows products in two main ways. Knowing which one a shopper sees tells you what the system needs from you.
What is the ChatGPT shopping carousel?
When someone asks ChatGPT a question with buying intent ("a quiet blender under $200 for a small kitchen"), the answer can include a product carousel: images, prices, merchants and short labels. OpenAI's help center says a product appears there when ChatGPT judges it relevant to the shopper's intent, that results are selected independently and are not ads, and that labels such as "Budget-friendly" are generated by ChatGPT rather than verified claims (OpenAI Help Center). Memory and custom instructions can also shape what a given user sees.
What does ChatGPT shopping research do differently?
Shopping research is the slower, deeper mode. OpenAI launched it on 24 November 2025 for logged-in users on Free, Go, Plus and Pro. It asks clarifying questions about budget and preferences, reads product pages across the web for a few minutes, and returns a buyer's guide. It runs on a version of GPT-5 mini trained for shopping tasks. OpenAI said it works best in electronics, beauty, home and garden, kitchen and appliances, and sports and outdoor (Search Engine Journal, CNBC).
Two details matter for merchants. Results are described as organic and based on publicly available retail sites, so a page the model cannot read cannot be cited. And OpenAI's own evaluation put shopping research at 52% product accuracy on multi-constraint queries, against 37% for ordinary ChatGPT search. Even the better mode gets roughly half of hard queries wrong on some attribute. The less ambiguous your product data, the less room it has to get yours wrong.
Where does the purchase happen?
On your site, for almost everyone. Shopify's March 2026 announcement describes ChatGPT purchases completing in an in-app browser on mobile and in a new tab on desktop, at the merchant's own checkout (Shopify, 24 March 2026). Large retailers can also run their own apps inside ChatGPT; when it ended Instant Checkout, OpenAI said it would work with retailers on dedicated apps that hand the purchase back to the retailer (CNBC, 20 March 2026). For a typical brand, ChatGPT is a discovery channel that sends a qualified visitor to a product page.
Three routes into ChatGPT shopping
Three ways a product reaches ChatGPT
- 01Public crawlOAI-SearchBot reads your product pages. Open to any site.
- 02Direct product feedApply at chatgpt.com/merchants. Approved partners send a full feed.
- 03Shopify CatalogShopify stores are shared with ChatGPT by default.
The routes are not exclusive. A Shopify brand is usually reachable by all three. A brand on another platform depends on the crawl until a feed application is approved. Whatever the route, the shopper still has to land on a product page that loads, shows the right price and has the item in stock.
Step 1: Let OpenAI's crawlers in
This is the step that silently removes the most stores. Many sites block AI bots wholesale through a CDN rule or a copied robots.txt and never notice.
OpenAI documents its crawlers on one page (OpenAI crawlers). Four names matter:
- OAI-SearchBot indexes sites for ChatGPT search. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, apart from navigational links. This is the one to allow.
- ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a user's request needs it. It is not an automatic crawler, and OpenAI notes that robots.txt rules may not apply to these user-initiated visits.
- GPTBot collects content that may be used to train OpenAI's models. Blocking it does not remove you from ChatGPT search. Allowing or blocking it is a separate business decision.
- OAI-AdsBot only visits pages submitted as ChatGPT ads, to check them for safety.
Is there a ChatGPT shopping user agent?
Not a separate one. As of October 2026, OpenAI does not document a shopping-specific crawler. The documented bots that touch product pages are OAI-SearchBot, which indexes them, and ChatGPT-User, which fetches them when a user's request needs it. Their user agent strings end in "OAI-SearchBot/1.4; +https://openai.com/searchbot" and "ChatGPT-User/1.0; +https://openai.com/bot", and the version numbers can change, so match on the bot name rather than the full string. OpenAI publishes IP ranges for each bot (for example searchbot.json), which lets you tell real traffic from impostors.
The third kind of visit comes from ChatGPT's agent, which browses in a cloud browser on a user's behalf. It signs its requests with HTTP Message Signatures and a Signature-Agent header set to https://chatgpt.com, so bot-management tools can verify it instead of blocking it (OpenAI Help Center). If you run Cloudflare, Akamai or a similar firewall, check that these requests are not challenged.
A minimal robots.txt that keeps you in ChatGPT search reads like this, one rule per line:
- User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
- Allow: /
OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to reach its search systems. After changing anything, check your server logs for OAI-SearchBot requests to product URLs, not just the home page.
Step 2: Make your product pages readable
The crawl is only as good as what it finds. A product page that renders its price in JavaScript after load, hides stock status behind a selector, or describes the product only in images gives a model nothing to compare.
What to check on every product template:
- Price and availability in the HTML. Both should be visible in the page source and stated in schema.org Product and Offer markup. OpenAI does not publish which on-page markup it reads, but structured data is the standard, unambiguous way to state price, currency, availability and identifiers.
- One canonical URL per variant, or a clear variant selector that changes the URL, so a recommendation for "the 42 cm, black" lands on that variant.
- The attributes shoppers filter on, written as facts. Dimensions, materials, compatibility, capacity, certifications. Shopping research builds its guide by matching constraints, and a constraint it cannot verify is a reason to leave a product out. Product attributes explained covers which ones carry the most weight.
- Reviews on the page, with a count and an average, not only inside a widget that loads late.
- Plain policy pages for shipping and returns that a crawler can reach.
This is the same groundwork that gets products recommended by any AI assistant. GEO for ecommerce goes through it platform by platform.
Step 3: Apply for a ChatGPT product feed
A direct feed gives ChatGPT your catalog as structured data instead of relying on what the crawler extracts. It is the route OpenAI's commerce documentation is built around.
Who can apply as a ChatGPT merchant
As of October 2026, OpenAI says onboarding product feeds is limited to approved partners, and the application form is at chatgpt.com/merchants (OpenAI, Get started). OpenAI does not publish the approval criteria or a timeline. Products must be legal and suitable for a general audience: adult content, alcohol, nicotine, gambling, weapons and prescription-only medicines are excluded. The standard feed format currently targets the US, and other markets need OpenAI's confirmation of countries and currencies (Feed reference).
What the ChatGPT product feed contains
The feed reference lists nine required fields for discovery: item_id, title, description, url, brand, seller_name, image_url, availability and price. Variants need a group_id and variant details, and dimensions or weight need their units. Three flags control what a product can do:
- is_eligible_search is on by default. Setting it to false removes the product from search and checkout.
- is_eligible_checkout is off by default and only matters if a checkout integration has been enabled separately.
- is_ads_eligible is off by default and controls whether the product can be used in ChatGPT ads.
OpenAI states plainly that eligibility does not guarantee display.
How the feed is delivered
Approved merchants send a full snapshot by SFTP at least daily, in Parquet (preferred), JSONL, CSV or TSV, compressed, UTF-8, in shards of up to 500,000 items (File upload spec). OpenAI's guidance is to send the full feed once a day and push changes through the API in between. A product missing from a snapshot stays live for up to 14 days, so set is_eligible_search to false when you need something gone sooner. Update price and availability whenever they change: a sale price or a pre-order date in the feed does not schedule anything on its own.
Two practical notes. First, add a tracking parameter such as utm_medium=feed to the product URLs in the feed, as OpenAI's best practices suggest, so feed-driven visits are separable in analytics. Second, the feed has to agree with the page. If the feed says $79 and in stock and the page says $89 and backordered, you have handed the model a contradiction. Product feed optimization for AI agents covers how to keep the two in sync.
Step 4: If you sell on Shopify
Shopify merchants usually do not need to apply. Shopify's Agentic Storefronts make eligible stores discoverable in ChatGPT by default through Shopify Catalog, with no separate app or integration and no transaction fee beyond standard processing (Shopify, 24 March 2026). Shopify's help center describes ChatGPT as a discovery-focused referrer: buyers complete the purchase on your own online store checkout (Shopify Help Center).
What to do in the admin:
- Open Sales channels, then Agentic, and confirm ChatGPT is active and the catalog is shared.
- Check which products are excluded and why. Unsupported products and missing data drop out quietly.
- Fill the product fields Shopify Catalog passes on: a factual title, a complete description, product type, variant options and identifiers.
Brands that do not run their storefront on Shopify can use Shopify's Agentic plan to list products in Shopify Catalog without migrating. The broader picture, including Gemini, Copilot and Meta's Muse, is in Shopify and agentic commerce.
Step 5: How to optimize for ChatGPT shopping
Getting indexed makes you eligible. Being picked depends on whether your product survives the shopper's constraints better than the alternatives.
From indexed to picked in ChatGPT
- IndexedCrawled, fed or shared through Shopify Catalog
- EligibleIn stock, priced, allowed category, US feed
- Matches the requestEvery constraint the shopper stated is verifiable
- ShownCarousel card or shopping research guide
- ClickedVisit lands on your product page and checkout
What moves a product down that funnel:
- Write titles that name the product, not the campaign. "Stainless steel insulated water bottle, 750 ml, leak-proof lid" beats "The Only Bottle You'll Ever Need".
- State the constraints people actually type. Budget, size, compatibility, skin type, noise level, age range. If shoppers ask "fits a 15-inch laptop", the 15-inch fit has to be written somewhere a machine can read it.
- Keep variants honest. One parent, clean options, a distinct price and availability per variant.
- Earn reviews that mention use cases. Shopping research reads reviews and third-party sources, not only your page. Review text that says "great for small kitchens" helps a "small kitchen" query.
- Be cited where buyers research. Comparison articles, forums and specialist reviewers are part of what the model reads before it recommends.
- Keep price and stock current everywhere. A model that finds conflicting prices cannot know which one is true, and an out-of-stock click is a lost shopper.
ChatGPT does not rank the best-marketed product. It recommends the one it can verify against the request.

What you cannot control
Some of ChatGPT shopping is not in a merchant's hands, and it is better to know where the line is.
- Placement cannot be bought organically. OpenAI says shopping results are not ads and are not influenced by partnerships. Paid visibility exists only through ChatGPT ads, which run on a separate product feed setup (OpenAI Ads product feeds).
- Labels and summaries are generated. ChatGPT may call your product "budget-friendly" or "best for travel" without asking you.
- Personalization varies. Two shoppers asking the same question can see different products because of memory and past conversations.
- Approval is not guaranteed. OpenAI has not published who gets a direct feed or how long review takes.
- Errors happen. OpenAI itself tells users to check price and availability on the merchant's site.
How to measure ChatGPT shopping traffic
Start with three numbers. OAI-SearchBot requests to product URLs in your server logs, which tells you whether you are being indexed. Sessions referred from chatgpt.com in analytics, split by landing page. And, if you have a feed, sessions carrying your feed's utm_medium tag. Then run the questions your buyers ask in ChatGPT once a month and note whether you appear, which competitor does instead, and what reason the answer gives. The reason usually points at the missing attribute. For tools that automate those checks, see AI visibility tools for ecommerce. More guides on this are collected under AI search and discovery.
FAQ
How do I get my products listed in ChatGPT shopping?
Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and your firewall, make price, availability and key attributes readable on each product page, and apply for a direct product feed at chatgpt.com/merchants. Shopify stores are shared with ChatGPT by default through Shopify Catalog.
Does it cost anything to appear in ChatGPT shopping results?
No. Organic product results are free and OpenAI says they are not ads. ChatGPT ads are a separate, paid product.
What is the ChatGPT shopping user agent?
There is no shopping-specific bot. OAI-SearchBot indexes pages for ChatGPT search, ChatGPT-User fetches pages on a user's request, and ChatGPT's agent signs its browsing with a Signature-Agent header set to https://chatgpt.com.
Can customers still buy directly inside ChatGPT?
Mostly not. Since March 2026, purchases complete on the merchant's own checkout, opened from ChatGPT in an in-app browser or a new tab. Some large retailers run their own apps inside ChatGPT.
Does blocking GPTBot remove my products from ChatGPT?
No. GPTBot is for model training. Search visibility depends on OAI-SearchBot, which you control separately in robots.txt.
