Shopify and Agentic Commerce: Agentic Storefronts, UCP and AI Checkout
If you sell on Shopify, your products are probably already in ChatGPT, Copilot, Google's AI Mode and Meta's Muse. Here is how that happened, where the checkout runs on each channel, and which switches in the admin are yours.
Shopify agentic commerce is Shopify's system for selling a merchant's products inside AI assistants and agents. It has three parts: Shopify Catalog, which collects and standardizes product data from eligible stores; Agentic Storefronts, the sales channel in the admin that sends that data to AI channels such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta; and the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), the open standard Shopify co-developed with Google so agents can check out with a merchant. For eligible stores it is on by default.
That last point is the one most merchants miss. You do not apply to be in AI shopping on Shopify; you are enrolled unless you switch it off. This guide explains what each part does, which channels are live as of October 2026, where the purchase actually happens on each, and what to check in your admin this week.
What Shopify agentic commerce is
Shopify announced Agentic Storefronts in its Winter '26 Edition on 10 December 2025, describing stores as made agent-ready by default and naming ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot as the first platforms. On 11 January 2026 it added the Universal Commerce Protocol, co-developed with Google, plus native selling in Google AI Mode and the Gemini app, Copilot Checkout, and a new Agentic plan for brands that do not run their storefront on Shopify. Agentic Storefronts got its own page in the admin on 11 May 2026, and Meta became a channel on 8 September 2026, the day Meta launched its Muse agent.

Which AI channels are connected (as of October 2026)
Shopify's Agentic Storefronts help page lists four AI channels. Where the purchase happens differs by channel, and so do the countries.
| Channel | How products get there | Where the shopper pays | Who can buy |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Shopify Catalog | Your own online store checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab | Stores selling to the US |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Google & YouTube channel or Merchant Center | Shopify-powered direct checkout inside the chat, if on | US stores and US customers |
| Microsoft Copilot | Shopify Catalog | Shopify-powered direct checkout inside Copilot, if on | US customers |
| Meta, including Muse | Shopify Catalog | Direct checkout on Meta surfaces, Muse "when available" | Stores selling to the US, Canada or Mexico |
Sources: Shopify's channel pages for ChatGPT, Google, Copilot and Meta, read on 22 October 2026. Each page says Shopify charges no extra fee for these channels beyond standard payment processing.
Two notes. Perplexity was named in the December 2025 announcement, but it is not listed on the current help pages; we could not confirm it as a live Agentic Storefronts channel. And direct checkout on Google, Copilot and Meta does not support everything your store does: subscriptions, bundles, customizable products, B2B-only products, local delivery and pickup are excluded, and Google Analytics and custom pixels do not fire in the Copilot and Meta checkouts. If those matter to you, check the channel pages before you assume a sale will track.
Google's side moved again this month. On 15 October 2026 Google launched Universal Cart in the US, a cart that spans AI Mode and the Gemini app, runs its checkout on UCP and, Google says, includes many Shopify merchants.
What is the ChatGPT Shopify shopping integration?
The ChatGPT integration is the one that changed most. In September 2025 OpenAI launched Instant Checkout, which let US users buy from Etsy sellers inside the chat, with over a million Shopify merchants announced as coming soon. In March 2026 OpenAI moved Instant Checkout to apps and said it was prioritizing search and product discovery. Our piece on what happened to ChatGPT Instant Checkout has the full story.
So as of October 2026, ChatGPT for Shopify works as a discovery channel. Shopify Catalog sends your products to ChatGPT; when a shopper wants to buy, ChatGPT opens your own checkout, with your branding, payment methods and checkout customizations. There is no ChatGPT direct-checkout switch in the admin, only catalog access. Requirements per the ChatGPT help page: you sell to customers in the US (your business can be based elsewhere), your products are eligible for Shopify Catalog, you accept the Agentic Storefronts supplemental terms, and your store has terms of service, a privacy policy and a return and refund policy published.

Shopify Catalog: the data layer behind every channel
Shopify Catalog is where the work happens. Shopify describes it as a structured source of product information gathered from eligible products, which AI platforms and agents use to search and understand products. Eligible products are included automatically. Shopify says Catalog uses its own language models to categorize, enrich and standardize product data, which is what people usually mean by "Shopify Catalog AI": inferring categories, extracting attributes, merging variants and grouping identical items sold by different stores. Shopify's October 2026 Shop MCP announcement puts the catalog at over 1 billion products.
What Catalog sends by default, per Shopify's product discovery page: title, description, options, images, price and availability. If your category data or key specs live in metafields, metaobjects, tag prefixes or title delimiters, Catalog Mapping tells Shopify where to read them. You can also group separate products into one listing when they are really variants of one item, and choose whether compare-at prices are shown.
The admin's Listing insights grade each listing on description completeness, image coverage, reviews, variant and option completeness, and shop policy completeness. Treat that as Shopify's own checklist. Shopify is also explicit that inclusion in Catalog does not guarantee a product appears in any AI answer; each channel decides its own ranking and wording.
On Shopify, being in AI shopping is the default. Being chosen depends on the data you send.

The practical point: the agent sees your product record, not your theme. A store with beautiful pages and thin product data will look thin to every channel at once. Our guide to product feed optimization for AI agents covers the fields that matter most, including the Google and OpenAI feeds that sit beside Catalog.
Shopify and the Universal Commerce Protocol
The Shopify Universal Commerce Protocol work is the plumbing that lets an agent do more than link to your store. Shopify's January announcement describes UCP as an open standard for agents to connect and transact with any merchant, compatible with REST, MCP, Google's Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) and the A2A agent protocol, and usable with any payment processor. It lets a merchant tell an agent what it needs from the buyer, such as a delivery date, and it covers discount codes, loyalty credentials, subscription cadence and terms like final sale or pre-order.
On the developer side, Shopify's agent documentation builds on UCP: a Catalog MCP server to search eligible merchants, checkout tools to build carts and checkouts, and order monitoring. Merchants that support UCP publish a business profile at /.well-known/ucp on their storefront domain, which tells an agent where to check out. On Shopify you do not build this yourself; the platform does. For how UCP compares with OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol and AP2, see ACP vs UCP vs AP2.
Opt-in vs default: what merchants control in the admin
Everything lives under Sales channels > Agentic. Shopify's management page describes a master setting, Allow Shopify to manage for me, which is on by default. While it is on, all channels stay active, direct checkout is on where supported, and you are auto-enrolled in new channels as Shopify adds them. That is how stores selling to the US, Canada or Mexico reached Meta on launch day without doing anything.
Who decides what, in Sales channels > Agentic
Default: Shopify decides
- Every AI channel active
- Direct checkout on where supported
- New channels added automatically
- Catalog shares all eligible products
Switched off: you decide
- Catalog access per channel
- Direct checkout per channel
- Auto-enroll in new channels on or off
- Unlisted status to hide a product
Turn the master setting off and the individual switches appear. As of October 2026:
- Catalog access can be turned off per channel (ChatGPT, Copilot, Meta, and a grouped "Other channels" for smaller agents). Shopify warns it can take up to seven days for data to stop flowing.
- Direct checkout can be turned off for Google AI Mode and Gemini, Copilot and Meta. Shoppers are then sent to your online store to pay.
- Auto-enroll new storefronts can be turned off, so future channels need your decision.
- Single products can be hidden by setting them to Unlisted or using the seo.hidden metafield. Both also hide the product from search engines and your own site search, so use them deliberately.
- Open-web crawling is separate. Switching off Catalog does not stop AI crawlers from finding your pages; Shopify calls robots.txt rules advisory.
Reporting sits in the same section: sales, orders, sessions and conversion per channel, a total across agentic channels, and attribution on each order.
The Agentic plan, for brands not on Shopify
The Agentic plan opens Shopify Catalog to brands that run their store elsewhere. According to Shopify's setup guide, you verify your business, import products by CSV, the Admin API or a PIM connector, link your existing store domain so channels can send shoppers back to it, and set up payments, shipping and taxes for direct checkout. Unlike on standard plans, direct checkout starts switched off and you opt in per channel. ChatGPT shoppers go to your existing store's checkout. The guide does not state a plan price; reports of a $0 base fee come from third parties, so confirm current pricing with Shopify.
What to do this month
- Open Sales channels > Agentic and confirm your store is eligible. If it says Ineligible, follow the reasons it links to.
- Decide on the master setting. Leaving it on is reasonable for most direct-to-consumer brands. Turn it off if you need to approve new channels, sell regulated products, or rely on checkout features the direct checkouts do not support.
- Fix the data Catalog reads. Work through Listing insights. Map metafields with Catalog Mapping so specs and categories reach the channels. Group variants that are listed as separate products.
- Publish complete policies. Shipping, returns, privacy and terms are both an eligibility requirement and a quality signal.
- Keep Google in sync. AI Mode and Gemini read your products through the Google & YouTube channel or Merchant Center, so automatic product and shipping sync should be on there.
- Watch the per-channel reports monthly and compare AI-channel conversion with your other channels before you change anything else.
