AI Shopping Assistants Compared (2026): A Merchant's Guide

Seven AI shopping assistants now stand between shoppers and stores. They read products from different places, buy through different rails and let in different merchants. This is the merchant's side of the comparison, as of October 2026.

The short answer

There is no single best AI shopping assistant for a merchant, because each one reads a different source of product data. Alexa for Shopping reads the Amazon catalog. Google AI Mode and Gemini read Merchant Center. ChatGPT reads the open web, approved product feeds and Shopify Catalog. Meta Muse reads Shopify Catalog and drives a live browser. Copilot uses Merchant Center feeds and its own checkout partners. Perplexity buys through PayPal. Walmart's Sparky only knows Walmart.

So the useful question is not which AI shopping assistant wins. It is which pipes your catalog flows through, and whether each assistant can complete a purchase with you once it picks your product. This guide answers that for the seven assistants that matter in the US as of October 2026, with a source for every claim.

AI shopping assistant vs AI shopping agent

The two terms are used loosely, and the difference matters for merchants.

An AI shopping assistant answers questions, compares products and recommends. The shopper still clicks through and pays. An AI shopping agent can act: it fills the cart and checks out, with the shopper approving the payment. Most products in this guide now do both, depending on the merchant. Whether an assistant becomes an agent for your store is decided by three things: whether it can read your catalog, whether you are on a checkout rail it supports, and whether you have opted in or left the default on.

Those rails are mostly standard protocols now. OpenAI and Stripe's Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), Google's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) and wallets such as Google Pay, PayPal, Shop Pay and Link carry most agent purchases. The Google section below links to a full UCP explainer.

The rest of this guide goes through each row: what is confirmed, what is not, and what a merchant should do.

Alexa for Shopping (Amazon)

Amazon retired Rufus on 13 May 2026 and replaced it with Alexa for Shopping (CNBC). It sits in the main Amazon search bar for US customers on the app, the website and Echo Show, free for any signed-in customer. Amazon says it compares products side by side, shows up to a year of price history, buys at a target price, schedules recurring purchases, and, through Buy for Me, completes purchases for eligible products on other stores' websites (Amazon). It draws on Amazon's product knowledge, reviews and information from across the web, plus the customer's own history.

For merchants it is two things. On Amazon, it is the assistant every shopper now meets first, so listing data is its raw material. Off Amazon, Buy for Me identifies itself when it visits a brand site and lets brands opt out, which is the behaviour Amazon has demanded from other agents (Search Engine Journal). Amazon also blocks outside agents: Meta's Muse since September 2026, and it has fought Perplexity in court over its browser agent. What changed for sellers is covered in Amazon Rufus is now Alexa for Shopping.

ChatGPT and shopping research

ChatGPT shows products in answers and in shopping research, a slower mode launched on 24 November 2025 that asks clarifying questions and builds a buyer's guide (CNBC). Products reach it three ways: OAI-SearchBot crawls public product pages, approved partners send a product feed (apply at chatgpt.com/merchants), and Shopify stores are shared by default through Shopify Catalog (OpenAI, Shopify).

Buying moved back to merchants. OpenAI scaled back Instant Checkout in March 2026 and said merchants can use their own checkout while ChatGPT focuses on discovery (CNBC); the background is in what happened to ChatGPT Instant Checkout. Organic results are free and, OpenAI says, not ads. Paid placements exist separately since ads launched for US Free and Go users in early 2026 (OpenAI). The step-by-step is in how to get your products into ChatGPT shopping.

Google AI Mode and Gemini

Google's assistants shop from Merchant Center data and the Shopping Graph, which Google said held more than 50 billion listings in May 2025 (Retail Brew). Google published the Universal Commerce Protocol on 11 January 2026 with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart among the partners (CNBC), and Walmart announced the same day that its products would be bought directly inside Gemini through UCP (Walmart).

UCP-powered checkout puts a Buy button on eligible listings in AI Mode and Gemini, paid with Google Pay, while the merchant stays the seller of record. As of October 2026 Google calls it available to select merchants, for products eligible in the US, Canada and Australia. To get it, a merchant meets Google's requirements, submits an interest form, completes the integration and marks products with the native_commerce checkout eligibility attribute in Merchant Center (Google Merchant Center Help). Merchants outside the program still appear in AI Mode answers through their ordinary feed, and Google's older agentic checkout can buy for a shopper on the merchant's own website. The protocol itself is explained in Universal Commerce Protocol explained for merchants.

Perplexity and Instant Buy

Perplexity launched Instant Buy with PayPal on 25 November 2025: US users can browse PayPal merchants' catalogs inside Perplexity and pay in the chat, with PayPal's buyer protection. Launch merchants included Abercrombie & Fitch, Ashley Furniture, Fabletics, Adorama and Newegg (PayPal). The merchant stays the merchant of record and keeps returns and customer service. Perplexity also runs a free merchant program for sharing product specs, first announced in November 2024 (Perplexity).

For merchants outside PayPal's catalog connection, Perplexity behaves like an answer engine: it reads the web and links out. As of October 2026 Perplexity has not published a current merchant count or a self-serve sign-up for Instant Buy, so treat partner lists in vendor blogs as provisional.

Meta Muse

Meta launched Muse in the US on 8 September 2026 as a personal agent that runs its own cloud browser and asks before it pays (Meta). Shopify shares merchants' products with Meta by default through Shopify Catalog (Shopify changelog). Payment runs through Link by Stripe, with Shop Pay and PayPal announced in September, and Amazon has blocked it. Meta has not published how Muse ranks products; the only evidence is a small third-party test suggesting most visible picks come from its live browser rather than the catalog. The detail, and a playbook, is in Meta Muse for brands.

Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft launched Copilot Checkout on 8 January 2026 on Copilot.com in the US, with PayPal, Shopify and Stripe as partners and plans to extend it to Bing, MSN and Edge. PayPal and Stripe merchants apply; Shopify merchants are enrolled automatically after an opt-out window. The merchant stays merchant of record, and Microsoft says it is adopting ACP. Microsoft Merchant Center is not required for checkout, but its feeds inform organic Copilot results (Microsoft Advertising). The same announcement introduced Brand Agents, a shopping assistant for a merchant's own site, available to Shopify merchants through a waitlist.

Walmart Sparky

Sparky is Walmart's assistant inside the Walmart app, launched in June 2025. It searches, summarises reviews, compares and adds to cart (Walmart). It only shops Walmart, so for brands it is a marketplace channel: the levers are your Walmart item content, attributes and reviews. Walmart is also taking its shopping experience into other assistants, through the Gemini partnership above and a ChatGPT partnership announced in October 2025. Walmart has not published seller-facing guidance specific to Sparky as of October 2026.

Where the purchase happens

For a merchant, the biggest practical difference is who runs checkout.

Where each assistant completes the purchase (October 2026)

Inside the assistant

  • Google AI Mode and Gemini, via UCP, select merchants
  • Copilot Checkout, via PayPal, Stripe, Shopify
  • Perplexity Instant Buy, via PayPal
  • Meta Muse, via Link, Shop Pay, PayPal
  • Alexa for Shopping, on Amazon
Checkout

On your own site

  • ChatGPT, since March 2026
  • Muse and Perplexity, for merchants off their rails
  • Google's agentic checkout on your site
  • Amazon's Buy for Me, on brand sites

In-assistant checkout usually converts with less friction for the shopper, but the assistant owns more of the session. On-site checkout keeps the customer relationship, the upsell and the analytics with you. In every in-assistant case listed above, the merchant remains merchant of record. The decision per channel is yours wherever a toggle exists, as it does in Shopify's agentic settings.

The assistants compete for shoppers. For merchants, the work is the same in every one of them: readable product data on every pipe they draw from.

One catalog, many pipes: what to do first

The pipes your catalog has to flow through

  1. 01Google Merchant CenterGoogle AI Mode, Gemini, organic Copilot results
  2. 02Shopify CatalogChatGPT, Meta Muse, Copilot
  3. 03Amazon listingsAlexa for Shopping and Buy for Me
  4. 04Payment walletsPayPal, Shop Pay, Link, Google Pay
  5. 05Your product pagesChatGPT crawl, Muse browser, Perplexity
  6. 06Marketplace catalogsWalmart Sparky

A sensible order for a brand selling in the US:

  1. Fix the source. One clean product record with complete attributes, consistent variants and current price and stock. Every pipe inherits its errors.
  2. Open the crawl. Allow OAI-SearchBot and verified agent traffic, and make sure price and availability are in the page itself. GEO for ecommerce covers the on-page side.
  3. Keep Merchant Center complete. It feeds Google's assistants and informs Copilot.
  4. Check Shopify's agentic settings if you are on Shopify: which channels are on, and where checkout happens for each.
  5. Accept the wallets agents use. PayPal, Shop Pay, Link and Google Pay together cover most agent checkouts listed here.
  6. Apply where checkout needs it: Google's UCP interest form, Microsoft's Copilot Checkout form, OpenAI's merchant form.
  7. Treat Amazon and Walmart as their own worlds. Their assistants read only their catalogs, so listing quality there is the whole game.

AI shopping assistant news: what to watch

Things likely to change this comparison before the end of 2026:

  • Muse's merchant terms. Meta has said it will take a small transaction fee but has not said how much or from whom.
  • Copilot beyond Copilot.com. Microsoft has said checkout will extend to Bing, MSN and Edge.
  • UCP checkout widening. Google still calls it select merchants.
  • Ads inside answers. ChatGPT ads already use product feeds; whether Muse, Gemini or Alexa for Shopping add sponsored products inside agent answers is the next retail media question.
  • Amazon and outside agents. Amazon's blocks on Muse and its dispute with Perplexity decide whether third-party agents can shop the largest US store.

More on the agents themselves lives under AI shopping agents.

FAQ

What is the best AI shopping assistant?

For shoppers it depends on where they buy. For merchants there is no single best one: Alexa for Shopping matters most for Amazon sellers, Google AI Mode and Gemini for brands with strong Merchant Center feeds, and ChatGPT, Muse and Perplexity for brands that sell on their own sites.

What is an AI shopping agent?

An AI shopping agent is an assistant that can act, not just recommend: it builds a cart and completes checkout with the shopper's approval. Meta Muse, Copilot Checkout, Perplexity Instant Buy and Google's UCP checkout all work this way for eligible merchants.

Can AI shopping assistants buy from any store?

No. Each buys only through the rails it supports, such as UCP with Google Pay, Copilot's PayPal, Stripe and Shopify partners, PayPal for Perplexity, or Link for Muse. Elsewhere they link to the merchant's site, and Amazon blocks outside agents.

How do I get my products into AI shopping assistants?

Keep one accurate product catalog, publish it to Google Merchant Center and, if relevant, Shopify Catalog, allow AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, and apply for checkout programs where they exist.

Does ChatGPT still have Instant Checkout?

Not as a general feature. Since March 2026, ChatGPT sends shoppers to the merchant's own checkout, and OpenAI focuses on product discovery.
