AI commerce news in 2026, one tile per dated eventThis week: retailers set the rules for agents

This is our running log of AI commerce news for merchants: the launches, policy changes and protocol updates that change how AI shopping agents find, compare and buy products. We update it every week. Each item has a date, a link to its source (the company's own announcement where one exists) and two or three sentences on what it means for a brand or seller. When a report is unconfirmed, we say so or leave it out.

Last updated: 22 October 2026. If you are new to the subject, start with what agentic commerce is, then come back here for the agentic commerce news of the week.

This week (week of 20 October 2026)

Walmart opens its store to outside AI shopping agents, with spending limits.21 October 2026. Walmart announced the Walmart Agent Gateway, an MCP-based route for approved agents to shop Walmart and Sam's Club that starts as a beta for companies and developers, plus Agent Profiles, due within a month, that let customers approve every agent purchase or set a limit such as $50, $100 or $200. Agents must stay within the shopper's intent, never see card details, and are blocked if they break Walmart's new terms (Walmart; TechCrunch). For sellers on Walmart Marketplace, agents now get a direct line to Walmart's catalog, so item data and stock accuracy on Walmart matter more. For brands with their own stores, this is the first full template from a top retailer for admitting agents on your own terms.

Anthropic previews Claude Duet, a proactive personal agent.21 October 2026. Duet runs in the background across a user's connected apps, sends a daily brief and asks for approval before it sends a message or makes a payment. It is a research preview for US Pro and Max subscribers by waitlist (CNBC). Duet is not a shopping product, but it is the third personal agent from a major AI company since 8 September, after Meta's Muse and OpenAI's Dots. Muse and Duet both ask before they pay, which makes approval-before-purchase the norm that store checkouts need to support.

Google launches Universal Cart in the US, with checkout powered by UCP.15 October 2026. Universal Cart collects items from many retailers across Search, AI Mode and the Gemini app, tracks price and stock changes, and checks out either inside the cart with Google Pay or by handing the items to the merchant's own cart. Named retailers include Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair and many Shopify merchants, and the merchant stays the seller (Google). This gives the Universal Commerce Protocol its first mass consumer surface ahead of the holidays. If you sell through Google Merchant Center, check whether your store is eligible for UCP-powered checkout; our UCP explainer for merchants covers the setup.

Shopify opens Shop MCP: product search and Shop Pay checkout for any agent.13 October 2026. One MCP connection now lets an agent search Shopify Catalog's more than 1 billion products, build carts, create checkouts at the store that sells the product and complete Shop Pay checkout for signed-in shoppers. Orders placed through an agent appear in the merchant's Shopify admin like any other order (Shopify). For Shopify merchants, any agent developer can now send you orders without a separate integration. Review your agentic channel settings, and read what Shopify's agentic commerce stack does for your store.

JPMorgan Chase blocks outside agents from logging in with customer credentials.13 October 2026. The bank confirmed that third-party agents cannot use a customer's bank login to act for them, while customer-authorized, read-only data sharing continues (CNBC). Together with Amazon's block on Muse, this shows where agent payments are heading: away from agents that reuse a shopper's passwords and toward scoped tokens and wallets such as Link, Shop Pay and Google Pay. Merchants should expect agent orders to arrive through those rails.

The question in October 2026 is no longer whether AI agents can shop. It is which stores let them in, and on what terms.

A draft Personal Agent Protocol from Sierra and Meta.9 October 2026. Sierra published the draft of the Personal Agent Protocol, nicknamed Poppy, which Sierra and Meta first announced on 6 October. A company publishes one standard file that tells personal agents how to sign in, which channels they may use and what they may do. The draft lists 35 design partners, including Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, OpenAI and Target, and positions itself as a complement to shopping protocols such as UCP (Sierra). Watch it if you run your own store: it may become the way agents identify themselves to you.

Prime Big Deal Days puts Alexa for Shopping's buying features to work.6-7 October 2026. For Amazon's October sale, Alexa for Shopping offered deal alerts on a described product type, target-price alerts, a year of price history and Auto-Buy, which completes the purchase with the shopper's default payment method once the target price is reached (Amazon). For Amazon sellers, price-triggered buying rewards products that are in stock and correctly priced at the moment the trigger fires, not only during the event.

American Express publishes a merchant playbook for agentic commerce.6 October 2026. The Amex Business Playbook for Agentic Commerce covers how to be found by AI, how to prepare for AI-assisted purchases and how to build trust, and Amex announced an Agent Purchase Protection initiative alongside it (Amex press release via Finviz). It is a sign that card networks want to own the liability question, which is what holds many merchants back.

Websites start deciding which agents get in.6 October 2026. TechCrunch found a patchwork: Yelp admits non-human traffic only through paid data licensing, Delta says it has no partnership for third-party agents, eBay restricts unauthorized agents but does not ban all of them, and Walmart said reported Muse checkout failures were not intentional (TechCrunch). Bot protection on your own site may already be stopping agent shoppers you would welcome; check what your firewall and checkout do with them.

September 2026

Anthropic releases commerce agent blueprints.2 September 2026. Anthropic published reference designs for building shopping and merchant agents on Claude, with Accenture, Mastercard, Visa and Shopify named as partners; payment stays with the retailer's checkout or an agentic payments provider (Digital Commerce 360). This is the "build your own store agent" route rather than a consumer assistant.

Meta launches Muse in the US.8 September 2026. Muse is a personal agent that browses, fills in forms and completes tasks on a cloud computer, inside its own app and in WhatsApp. It checks out with Link by Stripe and asks before a purchase (Meta). According to Search Engine Journal, Shopify added Meta as a channel in its Agentic Storefronts settings the same day (Search Engine Journal). Our Muse guide for brands covers how it picks products.

Amazon blocks Muse.20 September 2026. Amazon cut Muse off from Amazon.com, saying it did not identify itself, Amazon had not agreed to take part, and its handling of customer credentials raised security concerns; Meta says Muse never sees passwords or payment details (GeekWire). For Amazon sellers, outside agents are not a path to your listings; Alexa for Shopping is.

Amazon brings Seller Assistant to Claude.23 September 2026. The Amazon Selling Partner plugin connects a seller's listings, performance, inventory and sales data to an AI client. It launches first in Amazon Quick and is in beta with Claude for US stores; actions need the seller's approval and are logged (Amazon; SiliconANGLE). Agents now sit on the seller side of Amazon too, not only the shopper side.

Shopify opens checkout to browser-based agents.28 September 2026. With WebMCP support, agents working in a buyer's browser can inspect, update and complete a Shopify checkout, including Shop Pay, after the buyer authorizes the order (TechCrunch).

OpenAI launches Dots, always-on agents in ChatGPT.29 September 2026. At DevDay OpenAI introduced Dots, persistent agents with their own cloud computer and browser (TechCrunch), and plugin extensions that give apps a home in the ChatGPT sidebar (TechCrunch). Neither announcement was about shopping; for current ChatGPT shopping news, see what happened to Instant Checkout.

The 2026 timeline so far

The year in agentic commerce, month by month. Months without a verified platform-level change are left out.

January. Microsoft launched Copilot Checkout with PayPal, Shopify, Stripe and Etsy; the retailer stays merchant of record (Retail TouchPoints, 9 January). On 11 January Google published the Universal Commerce Protocol, co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, with checkout in AI Mode and Gemini for eligible US retailers (Google).

March. Amazon's updated Business Solutions Agreement took effect on 4 March with an Agent Policy: AI agents and automated tools that access Amazon's seller services must identify themselves, follow the policy and stop on request (Seller Central; summary by EcomCrew). A US district court also granted Amazon a preliminary injunction against Perplexity's Comet shopping agent, later lifted on appeal (Engadget). On 24 March OpenAI scaled back ChatGPT Instant Checkout: merchants can use their own checkout and ChatGPT focuses on discovery (Digital Commerce 360).

May. The biggest piece of Amazon Rufus news of the year: on 13 May Amazon retired Rufus and launched Alexa for Shopping in the Amazon app, on Amazon.com and on Echo Show (CNBC). On 19 May, at I/O, Google announced Universal Cart and said AP2 would reach its products, starting with Gemini Spark (TechCrunch).

June. On 16 June Adyen launched Adyen Agentic, one API suite for selling through UCP, ACP and AP2 (Adyen). Payment providers, not merchants, are absorbing the protocol split; our ACP vs UCP vs AP2 comparison explains it.

August. The Ninth Circuit lifted Amazon's injunction against Perplexity's Comet, finding that the user, not the AI company, accesses Amazon's site; the case returns to the district court (Engadget).

September. Anthropic's commerce blueprints (2 September), Meta's Muse (8 September), Amazon's block on Muse (20 September), Amazon's Seller Assistant plugin for Claude (23 September), Shopify's browser-agent checkout (28 September) and OpenAI's Dots (29 September). Details above.

October. Amex's agentic commerce playbook (6 October), Alexa for Shopping's Auto-Buy during Prime Big Deal Days (6-7 October), the draft Personal Agent Protocol (9 October), Shopify Shop MCP and JPMorgan's credential block (13 October), Google Universal Cart (15 October), and Walmart's Agent Gateway and Anthropic's Claude Duet (21 October).

What the year says so far

Read together, the 2026 AI agents commerce news has three threads that matter for a merchant.

Checkout moved, then split. OpenAI stepped back from running checkout in March; Google, Shopify, Walmart and Microsoft kept or opened theirs, always with the retailer as seller of record. There is no single "buy in AI" button. Each surface has its own rules, and most reach merchants through their platform or payment provider.

Access became a policy decision. Amazon blocks outside agents; Walmart admits approved ones within customer-set limits; Shopify opens checkout to any agent through Shop MCP. Each store, including yours, now has to decide which agents it serves.

Product data stayed the constant. Every agent in this log, from Alexa for Shopping to Universal Cart to Muse, chooses products by checking facts: price, stock, specifications, policies. None of the year's changes reduced the weight of clean catalog data. The AI commerce topic page collects our guides on getting that right.

We add new items every week. If a date or detail above changes, we correct it here and note the change.
